Chapter Four: The Fire

The next day, around 10, when they had finished their morning meal and were cleaning up, Alfi saw someone coming up the street through the windows in the kitchen. It was a single individual, dressed in jeans and a heavy dark coat with a hood that he or she wore up over the head. He motioned to Samantha to look and they watched as the person walked slowly up the street. The person had a backpack. As the individual drew nearer, Samantha stiffened a bit and said slowly. "I think it's the Janus' girl, the older one who worked with her father at their office in Conklin." Alfi had never really paid too much attention to the people living on his street, so he took her word for it.

"Do you think we should go out and chat?" he asked. "No" Sam said. "I think that we should just keep our head down now. We should not invite anyone to chat. We should just mind our own business. Whatever the reason why she is walking away from her home on such a cold day cannot be good."

So they watched as the young woman slowly trudged her way down the road. It became a tantalizing mystery to the Aimeses as to why she would be going away from home, especially on foot after Alfi had seen all those vehicles in the driveway the day before. For some reason he remembered the chill he got standing there in front of the Janus' house and his brow furrowed in worry.

"I think you were right," he said to Samantha, "I think the policy of laying low is the policy of survival. Keeping our eyes open and staying out of sight as much as possible is the most probable way of not attracting trouble."

It was strange, Samantha thought, after the girl had disappeared around the bend. It was strange that she had gone off alone. Could she be leaving her family behind? Did they throw her out? For Sam it was a tantalizing morsel, something to give her mind a distraction, from the grim reality of her present circumstances. It wasn't long after she went by that they noticed smoke coming from the direction of the Janus' home. Alfi quickly put on his parka and grabbed his .45. It was funny how now he never went anywhere without it. He wondered if there was going to ever be a time when he would feel absolutely okay not going about armed.

"I'm going to go check it out," he said, as he tucked the pistol into his shoulder holster. "Do the watch while I am out, in case it's a distraction. I won't be gone long." He jogged up the street. The Janus' house was just an eight minute trot away. He went by the Parsons. He waved as he saw Emily and Dean stepping outside. They were obviously concerned about the smoke.

He ran up and around the corner, there was just one more turn and he would be able to see the house.
